Well, hopefully all of you got my voicemails regarding our cancelled classes over the next two days. In case you did not, the health department has required that we close our school for Thursday and Friday because we have had so many illnesses over the last week. We will return to class on Monday.
Because we're missing two days to sign up for carnival basket donations, I'm going to list the items here. If you would like to sign up for an item, please e-mail me and I will add you to the list. anissen@hotmail.com Thanks to everyone who has signed up already!

Resource for Moms
A mom in our class passed this information on to me so I'm now passing it on to you. If you are interested feel free to check it out! :-)
As a mother and child advocate I am very interested in issues that effect children (health care, education, environmental issues, etc.). I recently found out about a mother's organization (and an organization for anyone who is a child advocate) that is non-partisan and mom-friendly (meaning you can interact on line when you have a spare minute or two . . . like most of us moms have). It lets moms know what is going on and how they can help change things (signing on line petitions, reading about important legislation, etc.). It binds all mothers (stay at home, working, grandmothers, daughters, and teachers). The website if anyone is interested is www.momsrising.org. I don't know if there is an outlet for this to get to parents at Little Acorn, but it has been tremendously informative to me as a mother. It helps connect all of us to important child and family friendly issues that affect everyone (dads too).

Alaska Week - Newsletter
A Note From the Teacher
I hope you had fun at our Luau last week! Lots of yummy food and good times! :-) We can all do with a little happy sunshine this time of year.
Looks like we’ve already got lots of orders for our class yearbook. If you’d like to pay early, I’m sure we’ll have 10 orders in no time so the cost will be $30. I’ve started working on the book. It’s always tough to make sure everyone is equally represented but I promise to do the best I can.
I’m looking forward to sharing some “reindeer sausage” with the kids that I bought in Alaska. Hopefully they don’t think they are eating Rudolph! Lol…

This Week in the Sunshine Class
This week we get to learn some things about Alaska. The kids are always fascinated by different places around the world and since I actually know a little something about Alaska, it’s always fun to show pictures and read books with them. :-)
My favorite book from a great Alaskan author is called, “Alaska’s Three Bears.” It’s on hold at the library so I’m REALLY hoping it comes through in time.
The kids will get their first experience with landscape painting. We tried this last year and I was really impressed with how they were able to do it. I’ll give them a book of pictures from Alaska and they will get a palette of paint colors and they’ll try to recreate the picture they see. It’s always fun to see how they turn out! :-)
We’ll also learn about the Northern Lights. I have some pictures of them which of course aren’t as beautiful as they are in person but I don’t suppose we can take a trip to Alaska together to see them! :-)
Last week several kids were asking me about Alaska after my trip. They wanted to know if I had seen any of those polar animals they learned about while I was gone. I explained that penguins only live in Antarctica and that although there are polar bears in Alaska, they are too far north for me to see. Then they asked if we could go on a polar bear hunt. I asked if they wanted to hunt for an imaginary one or if they’d like to hunt them in our classroom like we hunted for owls a couple months ago. They decided they wanted to do it like we did with the owls, so we’ll be doing that too!
We’ve got some fun sensory things too like driving cars in “snow” (they had a lot of fun the last time we did this) and cutting quilt batting to make “snowflakes.”

Carnival Class Basket
Well, it's almost that time of year again! Just one month away from our annual carnival. Every year each class puts together a themed basket that will be used in our silent auction. We choose a theme and then we put out a list of ideas of things that could be donated for the basket. You then decide what you would like to contribute. The baskets can then be bid on in the silent auction by anyone who attends the carnival in March. The proceeds go to Little Acorn for things like classroom improvements and playground items.
So, this year I thought we'd get a feel for what kind of basket(s) you would enjoy putting together. Because we have a morning and afternoon class we have to do two baskets. Please help us decide by voting in the poll in the sidebar of this webpage.
If you would like to be the person organizing it all and putting it together in the end, let me know!
Thanks for your help! :-)

Valentine's Week - Newsletter
A Letter From the Teacher
I had a nice visit with my family last week. It was SOOOO cold! Around –12 degrees the whole time I was there. Every time I walked outside I struggled to breathe as my lungs are no longer used to such cold temperatures. I was thrilled to come home to 50 degree weather! Although, even 30 would have been nice in comparison. :-) I brought some reindeer sausage back with me for the kids to taste next week as we study Alaska.
I’m excited about our Luau’s this week! All families are invited to join us for the fun. We’d love to see you there at 10:15 for the morning classes and 1:30 pm for the afternoon class. The parties will be in the same room we had our Christmas parties in. If you have any questions, please let me know!
Open registration begins this week if you know anyone who is looking for a great preschool for next year.
Our carnival and silent auction are coming up in about a month. Keep your eyes open to sign up to donate items for the silent auction and to sign up to run our class game booth for a short time during the evening.
And, our yearbook sign up sheet will be out this week. Cost will be $30 assuming that we get at least 10 orders. If not, they will be $35. Money is due before Spring Break. The books will be on my credit card so you can make the checks out to me: April Nissen or you can pay cash.

This Week in the Sunshine Class
This week we will do some fun Valentine’s games and projects.
We have a fun science project that involves putting white carnations into a vase of water and then adding food coloring. We’ll see how the food coloring changes the white flowers.
We’ll also have some fun counting games available and heart puzzles.
We’ll check out the letter’s X and O as we make a picture for someone we love and we have some cute heart stamps that the kids can use to make patterns.
On Monday and Tuesday we’ll end our day by watching a video, “Franklin’s Valentines.” We’ll cuddle up on pillows, eat something tasty and enjoy a good film!
And of course we’ll end our week with our Luau! If your child would like to give valentines to their friends, simply help them sign their name to the inside and don’t worry about names on the outside. You can help your child place the cards in the buckets in the front row (those are the kids in their class).
